Bali Portrait Photographer: You First, the Island Behind You

Since 2015 I've shot over 800 sessions in Bali, and the pattern never changes. The photos people end up framing at home almost never come from the famous gate with the long queue. They come from a wall in Ubud just after sunrise, or the open shade under a limestone overhang at Balangan while everyone else waits for sunset.

The honest part

Location matters less than you think

Hard overhead sun puts shadows in your eye sockets and under your nose. No rice terrace fixes that.

Here's the thing most Bali photography pages won't say. A skilled photographer can make a strong portrait almost anywhere, because one of the biggest variables deciding whether your face looks good is the direction and quality of the light hitting it, not the scenery behind you.

Soft directional light early in the morning wraps around your face and makes skin look like skin. That works against a plain plastered wall.

So when I plan a session, I choose the time first, then the place. The place just has to hold that light and be quiet enough that we can work without an audience.

Clients

Who books these sessions

Solo travelers wanting photos of themselves that aren't arm's-length phone shots. Professionals refreshing headshots and LinkedIn images. People rebuilding dating profiles. Yoga teachers, coaches, and creators who need personal brand images. Anyone marking a birthday, a career change, or a first trip alone.

If you're shooting as a group instead, the Bali family photographer page covers those sessions, and lifestyle sessions cover looser, day-in-the-life coverage.

Editing and direction

What the photos actually look like

Warm and true to skin, not orange. I expose for the face and let the background sit a stop or two darker, so you read first and Bali reads second. Grain stays natural, color stays close to what your eye saw, and nothing gets pushed into a heavy preset that will look dated in three years.

I direct continuously, which means you're told where to put your weight, where to look, and what to do with your hands. You never stand there inventing a pose. That single habit is why people who describe themselves as unphotogenic tend to leave with images they'll use.

Where we shoot

Quiet locations I actually use

Bali's most photographed spots have become queue management exercises. Lempuyang can mean hours of waiting for a brief turn in front of the gate, and the mirrored "reflection" is a piece of glass held under a phone. Handara Gate is a long drive from Ubud for a single frame taken standing in a live road. Tegallalang's main viewpoint fills with tour groups early in the morning.

They can work for portraits, but you're choosing the landmark first and the photography second. Where I take clients instead:

  • Campuhan Ridge Walk, Ubud. No entry fee. Walk it early and the grass ridge is quiet, with clean side light running along the path.
  • Balangan and Bingin. Limestone cliffs give deep open shade at midday, making these two of the few outdoor locations I like in the middle of the day.
  • Nyanyi Beach. Black volcanic sand near Tanah Lot, thin crowds, and a dark backdrop that makes skin tones separate.
  • Side lanes off Tegallalang and the Mancingan fields. Same terraces, no swings, no ticket platforms.
  • Jatiluwih, driven past the first viewpoint. Wider fields, far fewer people.
  • Your villa or hotel. Pool edge, palm shade, open pavilions. Zero entry fees, zero drive time, and the light there is often better than a location an hour away.

Studio work is the other option when weather refuses to cooperate. A studio portrait in Bali gives you full control of light and a clean background, which suits headshots, professional profiles, and anything you need to look consistent.

Step by step

What a portrait photoshoot in Bali involves

A portrait photoshoot in Bali with me runs like this:

  1. Message with your dates and what the photos are for. Personal, professional, dating profile, travel record. This changes everything downstream.
  2. I propose a time slot before locations. Usually an early morning start or a late afternoon finish, because dusk drops fast at this latitude and the hour on either end does the heavy lifting.
  3. We choose the right number of spots for your package. For a two-hour portrait session, two or three nearby locations usually photograph better than trying to squeeze in the maximum.
  4. Shoot day. I meet you at your accommodation or the first location, and direct from the first frame to the last.
  5. Gallery. Within 5 days as standard, with 48-hour express editing available if you're flying out.
Before you arrive

Practical details worth knowing

Some beaches, waterfalls and managed viewpoints charge small entry or parking fees, usually payable in cash. I'll tell you what to expect before the session.

Temples require a sarong and covered shoulders, and sarongs are usually available at the entrance. Standing on shrines or interrupting a ceremony to get a frame is not something I'll do, and staff will stop you anyway.

Bring two to four outfits for a two-hour session. Solid mid-tones and earth colors hold up against green and stone better than busy prints. Wet season, November to March, is still workable, and the soft light after rain can be excellent. If it rains, we wait it out or reschedule. If you'd rather not reschedule, your deposit is refunded in full.

Optional add-on

Makeup and hair before the shoot

If you want hair and makeup handled before we start, the team we work with travels to your villa or hotel and builds a look that holds up in the heat and reads well on camera rather than only in the mirror. Sessions run about an hour, so we schedule them to finish right as the light gets good.

What clients say

"Flight from Perth landed six hours late so we moved the whole thing to the next morning without drama, which I appreciated. My only gripe is I'd assumed Ubud to the coast was a quick hop. It is not. Bring water. Photos came back Thursday and my mum has already printed two."
Delphine Okonkwo, Fremantle

"Booked this for a work profile and felt ridiculous for about ten minutes, then forgot the camera was there. Honestly the hour went too fast, I'd pay for two next time. Also nobody warned me about the ants at that second spot."
Reuben Vasquez-Hale, Bristol

"needed new photos for my coaching site and had been putting it off for two years because i hate cameras. we did an hour, i got maybe fifteen i'd actually publish, which is fourteen more than i expected. editing is subtle, no weird orange skin. wish i'd worn flatter shoes for the grass bit."
Ingrid Salvatierra, Rotterdam

Questions

FAQ

Can you shoot portraits in the middle of the day if my schedule is fixed?

Yes, but I'll route you to open shade rather than open field. Cliff overhangs, covered pavilions, jungle canopy near the Ayung, or a studio. Midday sun in an exposed location is the one condition I'd rather work around than push through.

Do I need a permit for commercial or branding portraits?

Some venues distinguish between personal photos and paid shoots. Beach clubs, private estates, and a few managed viewpoints charge a commercial rate or require advance clearance. Tell me if the images are for a business so any permit or commercial-rate requirements can be confirmed before we arrive.

Are the images retouched, and how far?

Color, contrast, and skin tone always. Temporary blemishes and stray hair on request. I don't reshape bodies or faces by default, and if you want that, say so during booking so we agree on the limits first.

Who owns the photos and can I use them commercially?

You receive full personal usage rights. Commercial licensing for advertising or paid campaigns is arranged separately. I may use a small selection in my portfolio unless you ask me not to, which is fine and costs nothing.

Is it cheaper to shoot near where I'm staying?

Price is the same, but you get more shooting minutes for it. An hour of driving from Canggu to Uluwatu is an hour not spent making photos, which matters most on the shortest package.

What if I photograph badly and hate every frame?

Most people who say this have only seen themselves in phone selfies and harsh light. I use the first few minutes to get you moving and comfortable rather than expecting the strongest portraits immediately. If you have specific angles or features you dislike, tell me at the start and I'll shoot around them.
