How it works

What a family photoshoot in Bali with us actually looks like

Most family portrait sessions fail for one reason: everyone's told to stand still and look at a stranger holding a camera. We do the opposite. We give the kids something to do: a shell to find, a wave to chase, a grandparent's hand to hold. Then we photograph what happens while nobody's thinking about the lens. That's why a Bali beach photoshoot works so well for families, since the sand and water keep kids busy without any prompting.

That doesn't mean no structure. We still plan the route, the light, and a backup spot in case a toddler melts down at exactly the wrong moment. We just don't run the session like a corporate headshot day. Expect walking, some sand in shoes, and photos where your kids look like themselves rather than like they've been told to smile.

01 Stage 01

10 to 15 minutes of arrival and settling in while we read the light.

02 Stage 02

A loose sequence of prompted moments, walking together, a piggyback ride, someone getting tickled, directed gently without feeling staged.

03 Stage 03

A few quiet minutes of portraits once everyone's relaxed and the ice is gone.

Who books us

Who books a Bali family photographer with us

Families come to us for a specific mix of reasons. Some are on their once-a-year vacation together and want proof they were all in the same place at the same time. Others are marking something. It might be a first trip abroad with a new baby, three generations traveling together, or a milestone birthday. Sometimes it's grandparents seeing grandkids for the first time in years. A few parents first came to us for a Bali maternity photoshoot and came back once the baby arrived.

A growing number are multi-family group photoshoot bookings. Think cousins, in-laws, and friends who rented villas together and want one set of images that captures the whole trip, not just the immediate household. These sessions need more planning than a standard booking, but they're some of our favorite ones because the energy is impossible to fake. If part of your trip is just the two of you, the Bali couple photoshoot session covers that separately.

"proof we were all in the same place"

Once-a-year reunions, new babies on their first trip abroad, milestone birthdays, grandparents meeting grandkids again after years apart.

Why it's different

What makes this different from a standard resort photographer

Our lead photographer, Andi Regen, shoots every session, and the same team answers your messages beforehand. Nothing is outsourced. You're not passed between strangers or a booking agency. On larger group bookings, a second photographer shoots alongside the lead. Raditya joined the team in 2023 with a background in visual arts and creative media, and works as part of the same session, not as a separate lead you'd be handed off to.

Eleven years of shooting here means we know which locations actually work with kids and which just look good in a portfolio. It usually comes down to what your family needs most:

Toddlers and younger kids

Sanur and Nusa Dua, where the beaches are calmer and the sand stays flat and walkable.

Dramatic light for a sunset session

Uluwatu's cliffs, though these need careful timing around nap schedules since the best light lands late in the day.

Greenery instead of sand

The rice terraces of Jatiluwih, good for families who want variety beyond beach shots.

Low-effort, toddler-friendly

Your own villa garden or pool, which cuts out travel time entirely and gives younger kids room to wander.

Before you book

Practical details before you book

Everything you need to plan around, from group size to what to pack.

  • Duration: Most family bookings run 1 to 2 hours. Extended multi-generation sessions covering several locations can run up to 4 hours.

  • Group size: From a family of three to multi-generation groups of 15 or more. Larger groups need more planning time, so flag your headcount when you inquire.

  • Deliverables: Up to 200 edited images for a 1-hour session, up to 400 for 2 hours, and up to 800 for 4 hours, delivered via Google Drive within 5 days. Galleries from the Bahagia and Istimewa stay backed up there for 2 years.

  • Preparation: Bring 2 to 4 outfit options in coordinating (not matching) colors, and pack a snack for younger kids. Tell us about nap times so we can plan around them, not against them.

a small scheduling note

For many families with children under four, we recommend the golden hour before sunset over sunrise. Most toddlers we've photographed are more cooperative after a nap and a meal than they are at 6 AM. The light in Bali also holds its warmth for close to an hour before the sun actually drops. That gives us room if someone needs a snack break mid-shoot. If your kids are early risers who fade by late afternoon, tell us and we'll flip the plan around instead.

What a session sounds like once it's over

A few recent sessions, written plainly

We don't publish private client quotes without their separate consent. So instead of pulled reviews, here's a plain account of how a few recent sessions actually went, written by us, not a client. Consider this a sense of what to expect rather than a testimonial.

The Tan Family · Singapore

Landed four hours late after a delayed connection, and we moved their slot back two hours to make it work. Their son flat-out refused the shirt they'd packed. So he's in a t-shirt with a dinosaur on it in half the gallery, which turned into everyone's favorite detail once they saw the photos.

The Mitchell Family · New Zealand

Had their gallery back faster than they expected. The drive from their villa in Canggu, though, ran about 40 minutes longer than Google Maps predicted because of ceremony traffic nobody had warned them about. The kids' photos were the ones that got shared around their extended family group chat.

The Sorensen Family · Denmark

Booked a 40th anniversary session with nine people across three generations. The rice terrace location looked great in the photos. But the stairs were rough on a grandparent's knees, so we'd pick flatter ground next time for a similar group. Everything else about the day ran smoothly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you photograph a family with a baby who isn't sleeping through the night yet?

Yes. Newborns and infants under one are common bookings. We keep sessions shorter for very young babies, usually under an hour, and build in flexibility for feeding or nap breaks without it eating into your shooting time.

Do you photograph blended or non-traditional families?

Yes, without exception. Step-families, single parents, same-sex parents, chosen family, whatever your household looks like, the approach is the same.

What happens if a few extra relatives decide to join after we've already booked?

Tell us as soon as you know. A couple of extra people is usually fine to fold into an existing package, but a jump from four to twelve changes how much time we need per location, and we'd rather adjust the plan in advance than rush the session on the day.

How far will we have to travel with the kids?

As little as possible. We group locations within one region, so a family staying in Canggu, Seminyak or Uluwatu usually shoots nearby, and your own villa garden or pool cuts travel out completely. Traffic around Canggu and Ubud can add real time at peak hours, so we plan the route around nap times rather than the map. The Istimewa includes a car with driver for the whole day.

What language do you shoot in if we're not native English speakers?

We're fluent in English and Indonesian, and we've shot with families who speak neither as a first language. Directing a two-year-old doesn't require much vocabulary either way.

Do you offer indoor or studio options if a child has sensory sensitivities to sun, heat, or crowds?

Yes. Studio sessions with controlled lighting are available from US$365 / IDR 6.5M as an add-on, and for outdoor sessions we can choose quieter, shaded locations over crowded beach stretches if that suits your family better. Mention it when you inquire and we'll plan around it.

Can we get printed photos or an album, or only digital files?

Every gallery is delivered digitally through Google Drive, so you can print wherever you like. If you'd rather have something finished, a printed album, book or postcard set can be added for US$225 / IDR 4M.

Do you shoot in the rainy season, and what if it rains on the day?

Yes, and it's often underrated. Bali's rainy season (roughly November to March) still has plenty of dry mornings, and overcast skies give softer, more even light. If rain does hit, we can wait for it to pass or reschedule to another time or day, and if you'd rather not reschedule, your deposit is refunded in full.
