How long do you want to celebrate after the yes?

Every package covers the proposal itself. The difference is what comes after: a short celebration on the spot, a relaxed couple session, or a whole afternoon ending at sunset somewhere new. Every image is yours, nothing is held back.

Proposal Decoration

Proposal setups for every Bali location: beach, waterfall, rice field or private villa

If you'd like the moment styled, not just photographed, these are the decoration setups we arrange with our florist and styling team. The sample photos happen to show a lot of sand, but none of these setups are beach-only. Every one of them can be built at a waterfall, on the edge of a rice terrace, on a cliff-top, in a jungle clearing, or on the pool deck and lawn of your private villa.

Tell me where you want to ask, and we'll adapt the setup to that place: the footprint, the flower palette, and how it's anchored on uneven ground or wet stone. Prices are for the decoration only, paid on top of your photography package, and include the styling team's setup and take-down.

Photos that look like your relationship, not a stock template of one.

If you're searching for a Bali engagement photographer, you've probably already scrolled through a dozen portfolios that look identical - same cliff, same golden hour, same stiff half-smile. What you're looking for is different: photos that look like your relationship, not a stock template of one. That's the shoot I build for you.

How It Works

What an engagement session in Bali actually involves

An engagement shoot with me runs 1 to 4 hours, depending on the package, and moves through 2 to 4 locations grouped in one region so you're not losing shooting time to traffic. I don't hand you a pose list. Instead, I give you something to do together - walk, talk, laugh at something specific - and stay close enough to catch what happens next.

Most sessions follow a loose rhythm rather than a rigid script:

A slower opening 10-15 minutes where we're just talking, not shooting, so the nerves settle before the camera comes up properly.

A main block at your first location, timed around the light rather than the clock - usually early morning or the two hours before sunset.

A wardrobe change and short travel window if your package includes multiple locations.

A closing sequence at last light, when most couples stop performing for the camera entirely.

If it's a surprise proposal, the order flips

Before: I arrive early and take a position out of sightline. We agree a signal on WhatsApp, and any decoration is set up before you both arrive.

The moment: I shoot from a distance, blending in as any tourist with a camera, until the question is asked. No re-creation afterward.

Right after: I come over, introduce myself, and we let the adrenaline settle. The first few minutes after a "yes" are often the best frames of the day.

Portraits: a relaxed couple session in the same spot, plus a nearby second one if your package allows. An outfit change fits here, now that the secret's out.

You'll get every usable frame, not a curated trickle designed to make you pay for more later. A 1-hour session runs up to 200 images, a 2-hour session up to 400, and a 4-hour session up to 800.

Timing

The best time of day and year to shoot in Bali

Light shapes a photo. Location is secondary. A well-known spot at the wrong hour photographs flat and gray; an ordinary corner of rice field at 6:15am can carry an entire gallery. I build every engagement timeline around two windows: the hour after sunrise, and the ninety minutes before sunset. Midday between 10am and 3pm gets skipped entirely where possible - the overhead sun flattens faces and blows out skies, no amount of editing brings that back cleanly.

Dry season

April through October is dry season and the safer bet for outdoor sessions, with May, June, and September usually giving the clearest skies and thinnest crowds at the popular spots.

Wet season

November through March brings afternoon showers most days, but they're rarely all-day events - a rain-cleared sky an hour later often produces better light than a cloudless one, so a wet-season booking isn't a reason to wait.

Proposals

Proposal photographer in Bali: a different job than engagement photos

Booking a proposal photographer in Bali means something different from booking an engagement shoot, even though the camera work looks similar from the outside. The whole point is that one person in the frame doesn't know what's coming.

I've shot proposals from a genuine distance - positioned early, out of sightline, blending into the background as any other person with a camera would at a scenic spot, until the moment itself happens. No posed re-creation afterward. If I catch the real one, that's the photo you keep.

A few things make proposal shoots run smoother than most people expect:

01

Tell me the actual plan, not just the location. I need to know where you'll be standing, which direction you're facing, and roughly when the moment happens, so I can find a position that doesn't tip anyone off.

02

Build in a five-minute buffer. Proposals rarely happen exactly on schedule - nerves slow people down every time.

03

Book a location you can also linger in afterward. The minutes right after a "yes" are usually better than the moment itself, and I want time to shoot them.

04

Keep the guest list small, if there is one. Fewer people watching means a more natural reaction, and a cleaner frame.

After the proposal, most couples want a short portrait window while the adrenaline is still visible on their faces - that's usually built into the same booking rather than scheduled separately.

Elopements & Prenups

Elopement and prenup sessions

Not every couple wants a full wedding production, and not every engagement shoot happens before the ring goes on. An elopement in Bali gets the same documentary approach as a wedding, just built around two people instead of a guest list. A prenup in Bali - the term many couples from Southeast Asia use for what's essentially a pre-wedding shoot - follows the same process as an engagement session, timed further out from the wedding date itself.

Whichever one describes your plan, tell me at booking and I'll shape the timeline around what your day is actually for, rather than the standard engagement running order.

Locations

Locations I actually know, not just photograph

Ten years here means I'm not choosing a location from a location list. I'm choosing based on what actually works at 6am on a Tuesday versus what looks good in someone else's Instagram grid. For engagement and proposal sessions, I return most often to a handful of spots I trust:

01

The cliffs of Uluwatu, for late-afternoon light and genuine privacy once you're past the main viewpoints.

02

The rice terraces of Jatiluwih, a quieter alternative to the more photographed terraces further south.

03

The bamboo bridges and river valleys of Sidemen, for couples who want green and quiet over beach and crowd.

04

The black-sand stretches of Nusa Dua, for a coastline that photographs dramatically without the midday crowds of the busier beaches.

Your package sets how many locations fit in the time you've booked, but I'd rather get two or three right for who you are than move you through six for the sake of variety.

Getting Ready

Hair, makeup, and styling

Most couples underestimate how much a good makeup artist changes an engagement gallery, especially for outdoor sessions where humidity and long shooting hours test everything. I work regularly with a small trusted circle rather than a rotating list of names I've never shot with before - it means fewer surprises on the day and results that already match the tone of my photography.

Hair and makeup starts at US$100 / IDR 1.8M per person and can be added to your session in the inquiry form. Full details are on our hair and makeup artist page.

Three Real Sessions

What couples say after

"honestly I told Andi we didn't want anything cheesy and he just... got it. no fake laughing, no walking-and-turning-around thing. we ended up in this quiet corner of the rice terrace away from the tour groups for like 20 min and that was it. my fiance hates having his photo taken and even he said it didn't feel like a shoot"
Rachel Kowalski, Chicago
"we planned the proposal over whatsapp for like two weeks, andi asked stuff i wouldn't have thought of like which direction the sun would be. when we actually got there i couldn't find him at all which was the point i guess. didn't spot him until after she said yes. the photo of her face right in that second is the one i'm keeping forever, the rest are just bonus honestly"
Declan Fitzgerald, Manchester
"we're both bad in front of a camera and said so before we even started. he didn't try to convince us otherwise which i appreciated, just gave us stuff to actually do instead of poses. walk here, say something true to each other, that kind of thing. somehow the photos still look like us? first time that's happened with any photographer we've used"
Grace Whitfield, Melbourne
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are there entrance fees for shooting at Bali's photo spots?

Yes, most of the well-known ones. Rice terraces, waterfalls, and beach viewpoints in Bali typically charge a separate, higher fee for photoshoots than for regular visitors - it can run from around US$15 (IDR 250K) to over US$55 (IDR 1M) per location, and outfits like a formal gown or a full ceremonial costume can push the fee toward the higher end. These are paid on the day, in cash, directly to the site management or landowner. I factor the likely total into your location plan before you book, so there's no surprise bill on the day.

Do I need a permit for a proposal or drone shots?

Public beaches and viewpoints generally don't require a permit for a small, informal session. Temples and some private or resort-managed locations do, and a few restrict drones entirely for religious or safety reasons. If your shortlist includes a temple or a resort, tell me early so I can confirm what's allowed before we build the day around it.

Do I need to wear a sarong at any of the locations?

Only if we go inside a temple's inner courtyard rather than shooting from the entrance gate or outer grounds. Sarong rental is usually included in the temple's entrance fee. It's not required for exterior shots, which is where most engagement portraits happen anyway.

What if the light isn't working when we arrive - can we wait it out?

Within reason, yes. A short delay for a cloud to pass or a rain shower to clear is normal and I'll build slack into the schedule for it. What we can't do is hold a multi-location booking hostage to one stubborn sky - if a location genuinely isn't working after 20-30 minutes, we move to the next one and I'll suggest returning another day if it matters enough to you.

Can we shoot in more than one region, like Uluwatu and Ubud, in the same session?

It's possible but costs real time - the drive between Bali's south coast and the central highlands runs 60-90 minutes each way depending on traffic. For a half-day session, that eats into shooting time fast. If you want two distinct regions, the Istimewa Deluxe package's four hours gives enough room; for the Tenang Session or Bahagia Photoshoot, I'd recommend picking one region and getting it right.

What happens to unedited or "backup" photos - do we get those too?

No. What you receive is the fully edited gallery only. I don't hand over raw or unedited files, and I don't hold back edited frames to sell separately later - every usable edited image from your session is included in the count for your package.
