Yes. Taman Sari Timbul rents child sizes, and Indira Laksmi dresses and styles kids under 12 in its family packages. Our family sessions plan the timing around nap schedules.

Many costume shoots on the island are quick studio sessions: one kebaya, a painted backdrop, a few prints. We run a Bali traditional costume photoshoot differently. You pick the costume level, we pick the light and the location, and we shoot it with the same care we give a wedding.

Four Ways to Dress for a Bali Traditional Costume Photoshoot

The costume decides the mood of the photos, so we match it to the look you want and how much styling you need. We book the rental, set the call time, and plan the route around it.

Indira Laksmi: our premium option

This is the top tier, and the one we recommend for anyone who wants editorial results. The Bapang collection works especially well for a pre-wedding shoot in Bali. Indira Laksmi has designed its own collections since 2016, built on Balinese wastra textiles. Bali Klasik follows full ceremonial dress, known as Adat Lengkap. Bapang blends Balinese attire with the Japanese tomesode kimono and an obi-style waist sash, and the Contemporer series includes Tenganan, a nod to the weaving of the Bali Aga village.

Makeup, hair, jewelry and a fitted corset come from their stylists. Allow about an hour for styling before we start shooting.

Prefer a controlled set? Indira Laksmi's package adds 1 hour at 1930 Studio Bali, with carved furniture, draped fabric and textured walls. We shoot that hour, then take you outdoors for a second look in natural light if your package allows.

Kubu Bali Experience Ubud: swings, views and a pool

Costume rental is US$15 (IDR 200K) and comes with head accessories, without makeup or hair styling. Kubu covers a larger area than Taman Sari Timbul, with swings and open landscape views instead of carved statues.

The on-site pool lets you split the session. We shoot the costume first, then switch to a pool lifestyle set or a floating dress swing shot (US$25 (IDR 400K)) in the same booking. Entrance is US$5 (IDR 50K). Couples often use Kubu as the main set of a Bali couple photoshoot.

Taman Sari Timbul: carved sets in one compound

This spot works as an open-air studio with several built sets and stone sculptures. Rental includes hair styling and accessories, but makeup is not offered on site. Solo travelers like it for a quick cultural chapter in their portrait sessions.

Penglipuran village: a whole street of costume houses

Almost every house on the main road of Penglipuran rents a full set for US$10 (IDR 100K). You can also buy a Barong mask for US$15 (IDR 200K) or a bamboo hat for US$10 (IDR 100K) to keep; neither is available to rent. Village entrance is US$5 (IDR 50K). The village sits further from Ubud, so if you want a second backdrop, we can add a nearby spot on the way.

Where We Shoot in Traditional Dress

We pick the location by the look you want, then group spots so you spend the session in front of the camera, not in the car. Want a rice terrace in the morning and a waterfall before lunch? We build that route into a full-day photo tour with the driver included.

Mupu rice terrace: wide, layered terrain for full-length shots.
Sari Organic walk and Mancingan rice terrace: trees, paths and paddies within a few steps.
Manik Tawang waterfall: falling water and a river for movement in the kamben.
Puri Langon: temple architecture and palace courtyards.
Penglipuran village: identical gateways and bamboo roofs lining one street.
Taman Dedari: giant angel sculptures above the Ayung River.
Wedja restaurant: lily ponds, carved doors and a small waterfall.
Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring: rock-cut shrines, river and rice fields in one frame.
Delodsema village: one long street of family temples and painted doors, ending at a bamboo forest with a river.

How the Day Runs

Consultation. We discuss your goals, group size and the costume level you like, to recommend the right package for your needs.
Planning. We coordinate location selection, optimal timing and the rental booking. Once your date is confirmed, a 30% deposit secures the booking.
Session. You choose your costume on the day with the rental partner, and the stylist fits the kebaya, corset, sash and kamben. Men get a batik shirt, saput and an udeng headpiece. We aim for 8:00-10:00 or after 16:00, when the gold thread reads well and the heat stays manageable in layered fabric. The remaining balance is paid right after the session.
Delivery. We send your edited images as a Google Drive link by email or WhatsApp within 5 days, or 48 hours with express editing.

Why the Result Looks Different

A corset and a floor-length kamben change how you stand and walk. We slow the pace, direct small movements and keep poses respectful, because this is ceremonial dress, not fancy dress.

We also shoot the details studio packages skip: the songket weave up close, gold hairpins against the light, ceremony-inspired hand poses. Those frames tell the story of the costume, and clients print them next to the wide shots.

FAQ

What should I wear under the costume?

Seamless nude underwear and a strapless or low-back bra. Arrive in a button-up top so you can change without touching finished hair and makeup.

Do I need long hair for the traditional bun?

No. Stylists pin a hairpiece into the updo, so shoulder-length and short hair both work.

Can I do this while pregnant?

Yes. Stylists skip or loosen the corset and wrap the kamben above the bump. Tell us your trimester when you inquire so we can plan shorter standing time.

Can we shoot inside a working temple?

Inner temple courtyards often close to visitors during ceremonies, and some require a local guide. We use outer gates, palace courtyards and private compounds, which give the same architecture without disrupting prayers.

Can I change into a second costume?

At the rental parks and in Penglipuran, yes, you rent a second set on the spot. With Indira Laksmi, a second look means a second styling fee and about 45 extra minutes.

Can children wear costumes too?

Yes. Taman Sari Timbul rents child sizes for US$10 (IDR 150K), and Indira Laksmi dresses and styles kids under 12 in its family packages. Our family sessions plan the timing around nap schedules.

What if it rains?

Rain in Bali is usually brief, especially outside the wet season. We can wait until it passes, or reschedule the session to another time or day.

If you'd rather not reschedule, your deposit is refunded in full.
